Keyboard Tester

Highlight physical key presses in real time, track which keys have been tested, and switch layouts or desktop, laptop, and Mac keyboard types—all in the browser.

Layouts

  • Match the on-screen map to your layout

Choose US, UK, German QWERTZ, French AZERTY, and other regional layouts so the visual board lines up with the keys you actually press.

Live testing

  • See every physical press light up

Press keys on a connected keyboard to highlight them and mark them as tested. Ideal for spotting dead keys, sticky switches, or mapping surprises after a layout change.

Physical input only

  • A real keyboard is required

This tool listens for hardware key events. Tapping the on-screen keys with a finger or mouse does not count as a key test—especially important on tablets and phones.

Troubleshooting

  • When a key does not highlight

Try another browser, reconnect USB or Bluetooth, check OS keyboard settings, or test on a second device before assuming the switch is broken.

Keyboard types

  • Desktop, laptop, and Mac modes

Pick Desktop for a full cluster with numpad, Laptop for compact rows, or Mac for Command-style modifiers so the diagram matches your hardware.

Chinese-compatible layout

  • Chinese-compatible means physical QWERTY

Chinese input typically uses a standard physical QWERTY board plus an IME. The Chinese-compatible option mirrors that physical layout—not a separate character grid.

What is Keyboard Tester?

Keyboard Tester lights up keys as you press them on a physical keyboard, so you can verify detection, track tested keys, and spot gaps at a glance.

Switch regional layouts and desktop, laptop, or Mac keyboard types to match your hardware. On-screen taps are ignored—only real key events count.

Use it to troubleshoot sticky or silent keys, check a new board, or confirm that Chinese-compatible mode still maps to standard physical QWERTY.

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers about previewing solid colors, exporting at any resolution, full screen, and using your display as a reliable test or light source.

Why don’t on-screen taps count?

This tool listens for physical keyboard events. Touch taps on the visual keys are not treated as hardware key presses.

Does a missing highlight mean the key is broken?

Not necessarily. Try another browser, reconnect USB/Bluetooth, check OS keyboard settings, or test on another device before assuming hardware failure.

Can I test the number pad?

Yes—choose Desktop Keyboard to show a numpad cluster, then press Num Lock and the pad keys.

What does Chinese-compatible (QWERTY) mean?

It shows the physical QWERTY board people use with a Chinese IME. It is not a different physical key arrangement.
